This sketch represents a view of the village of Pozzano on the Sorrentine peninsula with Castellammare di Stabia (formerly Castellamare) in the distance beyond. Turner’s viewpoint appears to be from a boat on the sea to the west. The church on the hill with the distinctive square campanile is the Basilica of Pozzano (also known as the Santuario della Madonna di Pozzano), see folio 39 (D15811). Further views can be seen on folio 61 (D15849; Turner Bequest CLXXXV 60).
