Turner made a sequence of sketches of the Sorrentine peninsula from the sea. The studies on this page are all views of the coast between Sorrento and Vico Equense. The uppermost drawing depicts Alimuri from the Punta Scutolo, whilst the two sketches below depict a tower on the Punta Scutolo. The two lower scenes represent Vico Equense seen from the west with the cathedral at the edge of the cliffs near the centre and the historic watch-tower on the beach to the right below. Visible amidst the hills in the distance is the monastery of San Francesco.
