The details on this page represent part of a view of Naples seen from the Villa Reale (present-day Villa Comunale), an eighteenth-century park and royal promenade on the Chiaia waterfront in Naples. The sculptural figures at the centre of this sketch represent one of the fountains in the park, whilst visible beyond is a statue of a herm.1 The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 68 (D15863; Turner Bequest CLXXXV 67).
Further views of the Villa Reale can be seen in the Gandolfo to Naples sketchbook (Tate D15656–D15657; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 50–50a) and the Naples, Paestum, Rome sketchbook (Tate D16015; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 52a).
