The subject of this sketch is tentatively identified as a distant view of Cortona, an Umbrian hill town which lies between Perugia and Arezzo. For comparable views see folio 28 verso and 29 (D16538 and D16539). Turner also made a small pen-and-ink copy of a vista after John ‘Warwick’ Smith (1749–1831) in the Italian Guide Book sketchbook (Tate D13963; Turner Bequest CLXXII 17).
