Turner has used this page to make a small figure study of the back of a woman, annotated with written notes on colour. The sheet also contains an inscription by James Hakewill (1778–1843), part of his advice to Turner on travelling in Italy in preparation for the artist’s first tour of the country in 1819 (see the introduction to the sketchbook). The text reads ‘Bologna | For pictures see | Palazzo Marescalchi | Ercolani’ [i.e. the Marescalchi and Hercolani Palaces]. Further notes on Bologna can be found on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 19 (D13893).
