Inscribed by the artist in pencil ‘The Women at Foligno [?wear] the | H X [sketch] so that a Shadow is thrown [?across] | the face the better kind have’ across top, and ‘Top [?ent...]’, ‘R’, ‘B | Red’, ‘Yelw’ and ‘Red’ beside sketch of figure. Also various numbers and sums.
 
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
According to Turner’s inscription, the figures studies and notes on this page relate to studies of Italian costume seen at Foligno in Umbria, which the artist passed through after leaving the Apennine Mountains en route to Rome. Views of the town can be found on folio 18 (D13891), as well as in the Ancona to Rome sketchbook (see Tate D14718; CLXXVII 34).
