This page contains two landscape sketches of a medieval tower and distant hills. The subject is unidentified although it almost certainly represents an Italian view seen during Turner’s 1819 tour of the country. A further sketch, probably of the same landmark beside a bridge, appears in the bottom right-hand corner, parallel with the right-hand edge.
Ian Warrell has identified the study at the bottom of the page as a schematic copy of Titian’s Pesaro Madonna (also known as the Ca’Pesaro Madonna), 1519–26, an altarpiece in the Frari Basilica (Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari), Venice. Turner has annotated the drawing with colour notes: ‘Blue’ for the robe of the Virgin Mary, and ‘Orange’ for the kneeling figure below.
