Turner’s route to Rome took him through the passage of the Apennines. The subject of this sketch is a point near the village of Colle San Lorenzo, where the mountains open up and offer a panoramic view of the valley below with the town of Foligno. Along the top of the page the artist has drawn a separate sketch of the line of buildings in the historical centre of the town, as seen from a distance. In the foreground is a monument or fountain of some description, with a moulded top.
