This drawing of trees is a slight continuation to the right of the full-page view of Raby Castle on folio 31 verso opposite (D12293; CLVI 19a). As now bound and foliated, sketches of the castle and its surroundings fill most of the second half of the sketchbook, from folio 17 recto (D12298; CLVI 22a) to the present page, the last in the book comprising a drawing.
Technical notes:
As is evident from the title associated with ‘Page ...28’ in the 1909 Inventory, there has been confusion in the numbering of this page, symptomatic of the previous fragmentary state of the sketchbook rather than an error of identification on Finberg’s part, as he clearly recognised other views of Raby. The pencil number ‘28’ may obscure or reinforce John Ruskin’s customary red ink foliation, which is evident only faintly and intermittently in this much-rearranged book (see the introduction to the sketchbook).
