In addition to sketching in the Vatican Museums, Turner made a thorough study of the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures in the Palazzo Nuovo of the Capitoline Museums. Cecilia Powell first identified the subject of this drawing as a bell-shaped crater (vase) decorated with a design of trailing acanthus leaves and convex flutes at the base,1 set upon a puteal (wellhead) decorated with a relief of twelve gods.2 Both objects stand in the Galleria (Gallery) of the Palazzo Nuovo.
