J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

This view of Rome shows the city from the Janiculum Hill, a high ridge of ground to the west of the River Tiber which offers sweeping panoramas across the historical centre. Turner’s viewpoint is the northern tip of the hill near the oak of Torquato Tasso. He made a number of sketches from this position and the prospect seen here with the distant line of mountains, the Castel Sant’Angelo on the left and the dome of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in the centre foreground is very similar to that on folio 2 (D16159).
