This is one of the most assured of Turner’s Plaister Academy studies, in which the figure is fully realised as a three-dimensional form, and convincingly located in its space. There is another drawing of the Discobolus in this series (Tate D00068; Turner Bequest V P).
The verso is D40218.
Technical notes:
Peter Bower suggests that this irregular sheet is from the same batch as Tate D00060 (Turner Bequest V G) in this series, which is watermarked ‘HR’; he notes that it is, however, of a heavier consistency.1 Also on this sheet is an offset of another drawing, apparently that on Tate D00056 (Turner Bequest V C).
