The subject is taken from a drawing by John Robert Cozens (1752–1797) in Beckford Sketchbook VI, p.15, titled ‘On the Arno’ and dated ‘Sept 25 [1783]’ (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, D1975.9.15).1
