For another view of Goodrich Castle see folio 29 recto (D00581; Turner Bequest XXVI 28). The castle was one of the most celebrated features of the scenery of the River Wye, and had been singled out for special attention by the Rev. William Gilpin (1724–1804) in his influential Observations on the River Wye: And Several Parts of South Wales ... Made in the Summer of the Year 1770 (1782). It is therefore surprising that Turner made only these two drawings of it on this tour, and never, as far as is known, executed a watercolour view of it.
