The North Gate, one of the four entrances to the Close at Salisbury, is seen from the High Street with the spire of the Cathedral rearing up beyond. This pencil study was the basis for two finished watercolours. One was shown at the Royal Academy in 1796,1 and another executed in about 1802 for Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758–1838) (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge).2 A version in a private collection3 appears to be a copy of the exhibited watercolour. The subject occurs in the list of ‘Order’d Drawings’ on the flyleaf (D41250); see also other Salisbury drawings between folios 14 recto and 21 recto (D00421, D00428).
