An untraced view of Alum Bay,1 not the same as this composition, was engraved by John Landseer for an unpublished work of about 1799; see also folio 43 recto (D00450; Turner Bequest XXIV 42). Alum Bay is famous for the many varieties of coloured rock (chalk and an extremely friable sandstone) that make up its cliffs.
The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally.
