D00458
Turner Bequest XXIV 49

Turner evidently drew this subject, and elaborated it in delicate colour, for an ‘Order’d Drawing’; see the list on the flyleaf (D41250). No finished view of Bembridge Mill is known, however. Turner seems to have indicated the presence of an obelisk on the hill in the right distance. An obelisk does indeed stand there today; but it has been there only since 1849, when it was erected in honour of the 1st Earl of Yarborough, of Appuldurcombe (see folio 37 recto; D00444; Turner Bequest XXIV 36).
The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally.
Verso:
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
