The subject is probably close to that of folio 53 recto (D00460; Turner Bequest XXIV 51), and may be the Greensand Ridge overlooking the Weald of Kent between Sevenoaks and West Malling. The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally.
As Finberg notes,1 this leaf, folio 53 recto and folio 54 recto (D00461; Turner Bequest XXIV 52) were loose and may have come either from this book or from the South Wales sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest XXVI). They seem to date stylistically to about 1798 and therefore probably belong with the group of drawings in that book from Turner’s 1798 tour of Kent; see Tate D00627–D00649, D00654–D00658 (Turner Bequest XXVI 71– 87v, 92–96).
