This sketch depicts a view of the interior of the Duomo (cathedral) of Milan. Turner has adopted an unusual viewpoint looking down the nave which reflects his interest in complex perspective. The visual spectacle of receding tall Gothic arches is similar to that within two watercolour studies in the Naples: Rome C. Studies sketchbook (Tate D16140 and D16141; Turner Bequest CLXXVII 52 and 53). Finberg noted that three leaves were torn out after this point in the sketchbook.1
