From Turin, Turner made a short detour to Moncalieri, a town approximately four miles south of the city, notable for its castle, the Castello Reale, which was a residence of the ruling House of Savoy. This sketch depicts a distant view of Moncalieri from the east with the Alps rising in the distance beyond. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 16 (D14174; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 15). Turner has also made a separate study of the profile of the mountains at the top of the page.
For a more detailed study of the Castello Reale and a list of further views of Moncalieri see folio 17 (D14176; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 16).
