This sketch appears to relate to a series of views of Moncalieri, a town approximately five miles south of Turin. The subject is tentatively identified as the western side of the Castello Reale, a residence of the ruling House of Savoy which stands on high ground to the north of the town. The castle dominates the right-hand side of the composition and the view looks north in the direction of Turin. The sketch is very schematic but the artist has provided some indication of atmospheric weather conditions using freely drawn, vigorous hatched lines, perhaps describing a shower of rain.
For a list of further views of Moncalieri see folio 17 (D14176; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 16).
