Turner followed the road from Domodossola, ascending ever higher into the Swiss Alps in order to visit the Simplon Pass. This sketch depicts a view seen from the Simplon road of a town or village nestled within the mountains. The precise location remains unidentified although it may depict a distant view of Crevoladossola, the subject of the sketch on the next page, see folio 82 verso (D14303; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 81a).
For a general discussion of Turner’s journey to the Simplon Pass see the introduction to the sketchbook, and also the introduction to the Passage of the Simplon sketchbook (Tate, Turner Bequest CXCIV).
