This page contains two distinct sketches. The larger study, drawn with the sketchbook held horizontally depicts a church with a distinctive dome and cupola and a second building visible at the top of a hill in the background. The location is currently unidentified and it is not known whether it pertains to Turner’s journey in central France along the River Saône, or alternatively represents a view in the Alps on the road to Mont Cenis. The smaller second sketch on the right-hand side of the sheet, parallel with the edge of the sketchbook is inscribed ‘M[on]t Cenis’ indicating that this view at least relates to the latter. For further sketches and a general discussion of Turner’s passage across the Mont Cenis Pass see the Introduction to the sketchbook.
