Turner has used this page to make a number of figure studies, including a sketch of a single woman in the top left-hand corner, and a mixed group of men, women and children in the top right-hand corner. As was often the case during his European travels he appears to have been interested in the regional variations of local costume and he has annotated the drawing of the female on the left with notes concerning colour and other small sartorial details.
The position of the sketch in between two views of Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin suggests that Turner may have observed the figures in this town which lies on the border between Isère and Savoy, see folio 57 (D14080).
