The subject of this sketch is St-Michel-de-Maurienne, a village at the heart of the Maurienne valley in Savoy. Turner’s viewpoint is the banks of the River Arc looking north-west towards the belltower of the parish church. Visible in the distance is the mountain range of the Grand Perron des Encombres. The composition spills over onto the opposite page of the double-page spread, see folio 86 (D14136) and related sketches can be found on folios 88 and 89 (D14140 and D14142).
