Joseph Mallord William Turner Knaresborough from the South-South-East 1816

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 31 Verso:
Knaresborough from the South-South-East 1816
D40837
Pencil on white wove paper, 125 x 200 mm
Inscribed by an unknown hand in blue ink ‘330’ top left, inverted, and ‘32’ bottom left, inverted

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The few lines here, not noticed by Finberg, form a continuation to the right of the sketch of Knaresborough on folio 32 recto (D11420) opposite.
The number ‘32’ inscribed here in blue suggests that this page might have been in a different orientation, as a recto in the original binding. It appears to have been reversed in the binding at some stage after the blue numbers were applied, since the numbers were presumably inscribed on the folio recto. It seems likely that the pages were in the present orientation when they were catalogued by Finberg in 1909.
