This sketch records a distant view of Knaresborough from above the right bank of the River Nidd to the south-south-east, looking upstream to the Low Bridge, with the House-in-the-Rock to the right. There are a few lines of continuation to the right on folio 31 verso (D40837) opposite. A similar view was painted by Thomas Girtin in 1801 for Edward Lascelles of Harewood House (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester).
