West Burton is about a mile south of Aysgarth, on Walden Beck, a tributary of the River Ure. A particular characteristic of the fall is the way in which in normal conditions the stream of water fans out into a transparent veil, through which can be seen the rocks behind, exactly as recorded by Turner.
Other sketches at West Burton occur in the Yorkshire 2 sketchbook (Tate D11276, D11275– D11274; Turner Bequest CXLV 138a, 138, 137a; drawn in this order), which Turner carried with him on the same tour.
