Turner visited Ingleton in north-west Yorkshire towards the end of his tour of 1816. The orientation of this sketch, inverted in relation to the main sequence of subjects in the sketchbook, suggests that it was made at the end of the tour as he worked through the book backwards, filling up any remaining blank pages.
This view is taken from above the River Greta to the south-west of the village of Ingleton. Turner sketched the subject from a similar but closer viewpoint on folio 19 verso (D11472) and also in the Yorkshire 2 sketchbook (Tate D11124; Turner Bequest CXLV 58), which he used on the same tour. Yorkshire 2 also contains a detail study of Ingleborough from this aspect (Tate D11045; Turner Bequest CXLV 2a). The present writer has dated Turner’s sketches at Ingleton to Saturday 10 August 1816.
