This is the left half of a double-page spread, continued to the right on folio 39 recto opposite (D11506), recording the view from above Whitbarrow Lodge, looking south-west towards Castle Head, with the southern end of Whitbarrow Scar to the right, and panning right across the ‘Bog’ of Meathop Moss to Arnside Knott in the distance. Turner sketched similar material, but from more distant viewpoints, in the Yorkshire 2 sketchbook (Tate D11189, D11188; Turner Bequest CXLV 94, 93a), which also accompanied him on the tour of 1816. The present writer has dated Turner’s sketches in the area of Whitbarrow Scar and Witherslack to Tuesday 6 August 1816.
A following sketch on folio 39 verso (D11507) is taken from the same position but looking in the opposite direction.
