Here, Turner records the view from above Whitbarrow Lodge, north-east along the escarpment of Whitbarrow Scar towards the distant Howgill Fells. Above, the prospect is continued to the right (east) to include the view across the Kent Estuary towards Heversham. There are a few lines progressing the main sketch to the right on folio 40 recto opposite (D11508). Levens Hall is visible in this area and Turner has drawn a detail (possibly observed with a telescope?) in the left centre of the page.
The previous double-spread (folios 38 verso–39 recto; D11505–D11506) is taken from the same viewpoint, but looking in the opposite direction.
