This view looks down the River Greta from the riverbank close by Brignall Church. See notes to folio 19 verso (D11571; Turner Bequest CXLVIII 29, now bound opposite), for Turner’s work around Brignall in this and other sketchbooks used in 1816. The present writer has dated Turner’s sketches at Brignall to Thursday 1 August 1816.
