This sketch records the view from outside the south aisle of St Mary’s Abbey at York, looking to the inside of the west end and north wall of the nave, with the south-west pier of the crossing to the right. Turner sketched the same aspect of St Mary’s from a closer viewpoint in a preceding sketch, across folios 24 verso–25 of the sketchbook (D10913–D10914), and from still closer in a succeeding sketch note noticed by Finberg (D40847; Turner Bequest CXLIV 29 verso). He also sketched the exterior of the west end in the Yorkshire 3 sketchbook (Tate D11378; Turner Bequest CXLVI 5).
