This is the left half of a double-page spread continued to the right on folio 36 (D10934), opposite, recording the view of Ripon from the north-east, taken from the top of Bell Bank on left bank of the River Ure slightly upstream of the village of Sharow. It is one of three sketches taken in the same vicinity: the recto (D10932) has a similar view of the Minster from the southern end of Bell Bank, and the Yorkshire 3 sketchbook one from a lower vantage point slightly further north (Tate D11383; Turner Bequest CXLVI 9). A detailed study of the Minster from this angle but from a nearer viewpoint follows in this sketchbook on folio 36 verso (D10935).
For Bell Bank in this sketchbook see folio 35 (D10932).
