This sketch looks down the gorge at Pré St Didier, Val d’Aosta, to the old bath-house at the lower right, with the spire of the village church beyond, and Le Chetif and the Mont Blanc massif closing the view in the distance. Turner drew a similar subject from above Pré St Didier on the opposite page (D29070; Turner Bequest CCXCIII 20). This sketch is inverted in relation to the main sequence of sketches in the book. William Brockedon engraved a similar subject of ‘Mont Blanc from the baths of St Didier’ for his Passes of the Alps, published 1827–9. Turner also made a watercolour study of this view (Tate D36240; Turner Bequest CCCLXIV 377).
