This page contains four sketches:
i. (top left, the fourth of a series of five thumbnail compositions begun on the opposite page (D29294; Turner Bequest CCXCIV 45) ‘4’ Looking up the Val d’Aosta from Barme with Issogne on the left, inscribed ‘Isson Balm’, with a detail of Issogne Castle on D29294 opposite.
ii. (top centre, the second of a series of five thumbnail compositions begun on D29294 opposite; ‘2’ Looking down the Val d’Aosta from near Arnad, taken from a nearer viewpoint and further left than sketch ‘1’ on D29294 opposite, but with the same fortified hilltop house beyond Arnad visible now to the left. Fort Bard would be in the cusp of the valley to the right. A detail of the roadside buildings to the right is on D29294 opposite.
iii. (top right, not numbered but continuing the series of five thumbnail compositions begun on D29294 opposite) Looking up to the hilltop house above Arnad from near Fort Bard.
iv. (Bottom, inverted in relation to the three thumbnail sketches) Susa, with the church of San Giusto to the left, and the Augustan arch to the right. This sketch was made later in Turner’s itinerary, using up the space left on the page.
