This page contains two sketches:
i. (main sketch,): Château d’Argent above Villeneuve, Val d’Aosta, looking to Mont Emilius, numbered ‘1’ lower right. This hasty sketch revisits the subject of an earlier one made in 1802 (Tate D04500; Turner Bequest LXXIV 8), which in turn formed the basis of an unfinished watercolour (Tate D04895; Turner Bequest LXXX B).
ii. (lower right) A thumbnail sketch, numbered ‘2’ , of a distant view down the Val d’Aosta towards Château d’Argent and Villeneuve from a high viewpoint near Introd; inscribed in foreground ‘Mt C’.
Now bound as the verso, this side of the page was described as the recto by Finberg despite the other side, otherwise blank, having been numbered as such, probably by John Ruskin, and inscribed with the Turner Bequest schedule number.
