The title ‘Distant Alps’ was given to this drawing by John Ruskin. The subject is not certainly identified; although it may well be a scene in the Val d’Aosta the castle may not be the Château de St Pierre as the present writer thought at the time of the 1999 Tate/Martigny exhibition (for a drawing certainly of that castle from this sketchbook see D04555; Turner Bequest LXXIV 62).
