This sketch is on the verso of D04582; Turner Bequest LXXIV 89, which has a subject perhaps in the Val d’Aosta. The present subject is certainly in the valley, being a quick first impression of Château d’Argent, above Villeneuve, with Mount Emilius in the background. Turner made a more finished version in this sketchbook (D04500; Turner Bequest LXXIV 8) which led in turn to a colour study made after he returned to England (Tate D04895, Turner Bequest LXXX B).
