This sketch is on the verso of D04494; Turner Bequest LXXIV 2 which has a view of Martigny; see catalogue notes for views of the town from this sketchbook. Here Turner has drawn the cabriolet that he and his travelling companion Newbey Lowson had bought in Paris for their journey and had sent on from Geneva to await them at Martigny. Later, referring to this sketch, he incorporated the vehicle in the foreground of his design for the illustration of Martigny for Samuel Rogers’s poem Italy (1830); the watercolour is Tate D27671; Turner Bequest CCLXXX 154. In this later image it is shown outside the inn, La Cygne, where Turner had stayed.
