This sketch, which (as has not been previously noted) is continued on folio 46 verso, opposite (D41541), served as the basis for the watercolour Woodcock Shooting on the Chevin (Wallace Collection, London) painted for Sir William Pilkington of Chevet Hall, Wakefield and dated 1813.1 A small splash of blue watercolour near the bottom left edge of the leaf presumably occurred as Turner worked on the Pilkington watercolour, the date of which confirms that the sketch can have been made no later than the autumn of 1813. Presumably but not absolutely certainly, the watercolour was made not long after the sketch, and a list of subjects on folio 4 recto (D09063), above, which includes ‘10. Woodcock’ records the intention to develop the finished composition.
