This sketch records the view from immediately west of the barbican of Scarborough Castle, looking east along the north bay escarpment to the keep. The panorama is continued to the right in another sketch in the sequence (D11943; Turner Bequest CL 24) to take in the view on the south bay side of the castle. Turner recorded similar material to that panorama in a further sketch (D11917; Turner Bequest CL 3) recorded from a viewpoint slightly further to the right (south) and similar material to the present subject in yet another sketch (D11929; Turner Bequest CL 12) from a still more distant viewpoint.
