Eric Shanes has identified the view as of Brent Tor and the Lyd valley, across Fernworthy Down from near the Fox and Hounds Inn on the Tavistock to Okehampton road1 on the western fringes of Dartmoor (for the two towns see under folios 143 verso and 43 recto respectively; D09661, D09526). The inn is at Fox and Hounds Cross south of Shortacombe, about two miles north-east of Lydford (see under folio 28 recto; D09510). Brent Tor is an outcrop surmounted by a church near the village of North Brentor to the south-west; it appears on the horizon to the left. Shanes has noted the sketch as the basis for a watercolour study (Tate D25436; Turner Bequest CCLXIII 313).2
