Hatherleigh, Devon, is seen to the north, with the bridge over the River Lew in the foreground and the slender spire of St John the Baptist’s Church in the distance. Turner’s viewpoint is near the modern roundabout towards the southern end of the by-pass running round the west of the town, which is on the main road seven miles north-west of Okehampton (see under D09526; CXXXII 43). From here the church is now obscured by trees, but it can be seen from the bridge. For a possible view at nearby Hele Bridge on the River Torridge, see folio 92 recto (D09581); there is another Torridge view, probably nearby, on folio 94 recto (D09583).
