Joseph Mallord William Turner ?The River Dart below Steep Hills on Dartmoor 1814

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 119 Verso:
?The River Dart below Steep Hills on Dartmoor 1814
D09615
Turner Bequest CXXXII 119a
Pencil on white wove paper, 90 x 152 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘R’ top left, ‘Red’ centre, and ‘Dt’ bottom right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The drawing is inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. Turner’s inscription ‘Dt’ may, as Finberg suggested,1 indicate the River Dart somewhere in its course on the south-east side of Dartmoor. There is a similar ‘Dt’ inscription on folio 115 verso (D09608), while an inscription on folio 126 verso (D09629) appears to indicate Dartmeet Bridge.
For other definite or likely Dartmoor views, see under folio 8 recto (D09489).
