Eric Shanes has identified this sketch, looking north up the Hamoaze to Saltash, as the topographical basis for the watercolour Saltash, Cornwall of 1825 (British Museum, London),1 engraved in 1827 for the series Picturesque Views in England and Wales.2 There are similar views on folios 23 recto, 25 recto and 28 verso (D09695, D09697, D09702), and the sketch on folio 11 recto (D09682) appears to be related.
The left background in the present drawing corresponds closely with the left and central parts of the England and Wales watercolour, though Turner gives the remaining hills much less prominence there in order to concentrate attention on the crowded boats he introduces in the foreground.
Turner’s other major Saltash subject was the painting Saltash with the Water Ferry, exhibited at his gallery in 1812 (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York),3 based on a slight study in the 1811 Devonshire Coast, No.1 sketchbook (Tate D08487; Turner Bequest CXXIII 62a).
