The Dart Estuary is seen to the south-east; the foreground is now built over, but a close match for the viewpoint is The Keep Gardens, off Townstal Hill, on the northern approaches to Dartmouth. The tower of St Saviour’s Church is in the middle distance to the left, with Kingswear on the opposite bank and the shallow spire of St Petrox’s Church above Dartmouth Castle in the distance. There are two sketches from a very similar viewpoint in the 1811 Corfe to Dartmouth sketchbook (Tate D08861, D08862; Turner Bequest CXXIV 46, 47).
This is one of a sequence of views around Dartmouth and the Dart Estuary between folios 50 recto and 60 recto (D09730, D09744); for other sketches made in 1811, see under the first of these.
