Turner’s sketch is made looking south from near Buckfast, Devon, with Holy Trinity Church, Buckfastleigh, seen to the right; Buckfastleigh itself lies hidden behind the hill, much of which has since been quarried away on this side. The Dart Bridge carrying the Ashburton road over the river is in the middle distance towards the left, and is now largely obscured by trees. There are views of the bridge and church from the opposite direction on folios 27 recto and 28 recto (D09846, D09839; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 50, 44).
Further views around Buckfastleigh and Buckfast Abbey are on folios 23 recto, 25 recto, 26 recto, 27 recto, 28 recto and 29 recto (D09855, D09842, D09843, D09846, D09839, D09845; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 57, 46, 47, 50, 44, 49); the architectural details inside the back cover (D40883) may also be related.
