This drawing is the basis of a gouache of Farnley Hall, Yorkshire, executed for its owner, Turner’s friend and patron Walter Fawkes (private collection),1 and shown at Fawkes’s 1819 London exhibition of his Turners and other works as no.10, ‘Farnley, Yorkshire, a Sketch (one of a set)’.2 Compare the thumbnail sketch from the same direction in the 1818 Farnley sketchbook (Tate D12017; Turner Bequest CLIII 13a).
A straight edge has been used to establish some of the elements of the architecture, although those defining the horizontal elements are somewhat haphazard and would not meet at a consistent vanishing point beyond the picture space to the right. The trees to the left are continued a little way onto folio 30 verso opposite (D09810; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 18a). Indicated lightly among the foliage towards the right is the porch shown on folio 1 verso (D09790; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 1a).
For other views at and around Farnley Hall and nearby Yorkshire properties belonging to Walter Fawkes see under folio 1 verso (D09790). David Hill (who has catalogued much of the contemporary Yorkshire material elsewhere in the present catalogue) once thought the Yorkshire subjects in this sketchbook dated to about 1814 or 1815,3 but now considers them to relate to Turner’s 1816 visit (see the Introduction).
