Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg was right to suggest this as a plan of Fountains Abbey,1 although it is very slight and rather inaccurate, almost as though done from memory or by an amateur companion of the artist’s (conceivably a member of Walter Fawkes’s Yorkshire household; see the sketchbook’s Introduction). There is a rather more detailed version on folio 41 recto (D09838; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 43).
